We foster a sense of understanding
of consumers needs and
demand a sense of responsibility
in their satisfaction.

That's the reason why fragrances and flavours are so uniquely able to trigger our memories and stimulate our emotions. And why the satisfaction of so many of our needs, wants and desires depends on them.

Objective and aim of the SFFIA

The Swiss Flavour and Fragrance Industry Association was founded in Geneva on December 1999, initially with 10 member companies. Today ssfia counts 15 members, which are the main players of the industry in Switzerland. Since its creation the sffia have been lucky to count on the active support and the always appreciated participation of the experts from the two leading companies in the industry, which are both headquartered in Switzerland. This gives the association a weight, which allows it to be well respected not only in Switzerland but also in the EU.

The association primary objective is to contribute to the development of the Swiss Flavour and Fragrance Industry and defend the common interest of its members. It represents the Swiss Flavour and Fragrance Industry vis-à-vis the Swiss authority and economic entities, as well as within foreign and international organizations – among others EFFA, IFRA and IOFI.

We ensure that we further the interests of our members during consultation procedures on the elaboration of national and international legislations governing food, personal and home care industries or any other industry where flavours or fragrances can be used.

The associations also provides its members with regular updates on the European and worldwide rules and regulations governing our products and their uses. It also ensures that its members comply with the provisions off the EFFA, IFRA and IOFI respective codes of practice and do fulfill their obligations toward the Association.

Twice a year the sffia member meet to discuss the challenges we face in the industry and to better understand how to best protect its interest while at the same continue delivering exciting new flavours and perfumes.

Message of the president

Flavours and Fragrances are wonderful vectors of happiness and helps people feel better. Their applications are far-reaching and quite diverse: from drugs to soaps or to yogurts to drinks, there are nearly no product on a supermarket shelves, which does not contain one or the other (with the clear exception of natural products). Without them our world would be less tasty and more dull…

The creation of thousands of new fragrances and flavours every year is a difficult act between art and science. The sourcing and supply of the 3,000 plus raw materials needed for their production is getting ever more challenging. Finally next to a delicious taste or a wonderful smell, a fragrance or flavour needs to always fully comply to the all the latest rules and regulations aiming at protecting the well-being of us all - the consumers.

Our industry is without doubt a very complex one and this is why we need together to define and apply the strictest standards in terms of quality, production and regulatory. We also need to act in a responsible way, making it our duty to embrace the challenges of sustainable and responsible sourcing as well as not using new aroma chemicals that could be damaging to the environment.

Worldwide EFFA, IOFI and IFRA are actively working on all those different aspects to ensure that we, as an industry, are not only delighting consumers but are doing it the right way. It is our aim, within the sffia, to ensure that the actors of the F&F industry active in Switzerland, do actively participate to the developments of new standards and regulations and fully comply to the existing ones.

By working together within the global framework of our industry associations we can ensure that people in Switzerland, Europa and worldwide will continue to have many enjoyable moments on a daily basis.

Let’s taste and smell… in a responsible, safe and sustainable way!
Richard Illi, President SFFIA
